Traveled to St. Petersburg, FL on April 23rd, where I met Captain Roy, along with Fred, Scott, and Pete (our other crew members). We began the process of loading gear and provisions aboard "14 Pennies", our 53 foot sailboat, followed by registration and briefing at the St. Petersburg Yacht Club. Our adventure would be a participant in the 2014 Regata del Sol al Sol sailing race to Isla Mujeres, Mexico. After approximately 500 miles of sailing, we finished a respectable third place overall and second place in our class. After several days of parties and ceremonies we headed back to St. Petersburg, unfortunately running into twelve foot seas, twenty knot head wind with opposing current. It was a wet and lumpy ride for a couple of days before everything settled down. This was my first experience with "off shore" sailing/racing, and I found it to be a wild adventure. I was very lucky to have joined with a great captain and crew aboard a beautiful brand new sailboat.
